Advisor site inspection · Advisor stayed overnight
Reported visit · September 2025
A September 2025 overnight stay and inspection at Dusit Thani Kyoto gave the advisor modern design, generous rooms and good value about a ten-minute walk from Kyoto Station. Service was the main weakness, especially after a familiarization visit to The Mitsui; the advisor acknowledged that this comparison may have sharpened their criticism. Unoccupied staff repeatedly failed to greet the advisor, a dirty breakfast plate remained for about ten minutes, and the room escort kept shoes on, unlike the more careful introduction experienced at The Mitsui. Corridor voices and laughter were clearly audible even across the room. The inspection felt low-energy and poorly informed; the advisor questioned the explanations of courtyard-facing Premier rooms and window screens after later looking online. Wooden exterior slats and screens could restrict the outlook. Positives included a bright courtyard, spacious entry-level rooms, separate bathroom areas, evening sweets and varied dining. Restaurant opening days varied, while breakfast inclusion depended on the rate; comparing available rate options was worthwhile. When included, breakfast combined an extensive buffet with Western and Thai à-la-carte dishes. A complimentary Saturday maiko performance and a paid tea experience had limited places, so advance booking was advised. The spa offered Thai massage. Twin-to-king connecting rooms were available. The small gym operated 24 hours; pool hours were then 7 a.m.–9 p.m., with children admitted only from 7–10 a.m. and a 120-centimeter height requirement. The welcome snack contained peanuts. Key-card checks provided extra security, but a live camera display in the lift felt unsettling to the advisor. A playground opposite was useful for families. The informal, widely English-speaking setting could suit nervous first-time visitors or budget-conscious guests new to luxury hotels. The advisor would choose elsewhere for travelers expecting highly polished, traditional Japanese hospitality.
